You can’t walk around Sanlúcar de Barrameda for long before wondering what’s through the gates, behind the mighty wall, inside the beautiful building. Thankfully several guided walking tours through the old, little city are available – start with these!

You’ll discover the history of the Barrio Alto district on the Sanlúcar & Sus Mañanas historical tour while strolling through convents, gardens, palaces, and visiting a Gothic castle, a Mudejar church and the local market. ‘The best way to know Sanlúcar,’ say the guides from Sanlúcar Smile. ‘We will show you the true essence of this little Southern spot.’
Monday to Saturday at 11.00am. Meeting point: Cabildo Square. Duration: 2h approx. Price: Adults from 10€ / Children (5-12 year old) free. Book in advance.

This is such a photogenic city, and Sanlúcar & Sus Luces proves it with a sunset stroll up to Barrio Alto as whitewashed walls are lit up with a glow and bodega alleys are cast in deep shadows. The guides will provide some of the history as you make your way to the top of the Castle of Santiago. According to history, Queen Isabel La Católica saw the sea for the first time from one of its windows, and it’s still the place for the best views of the Guadalquivir river mouth and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
Monday to Friday at sunset (obviously times vary!). Meeting point: Cabildo Square. Duration: 2h approx. Price: Adults from 25€ / Children (5-12 years old) 5€. Book in advance.

And for history of some world-changing events, how about the El Puerto del Mundo tour, celebrating the 5th Centenary of the First Circumnavigation around the World (1519 – 1522). It was from here that Ferdinand Magellan and 265 sailors set sail on September 1519. Only one ship, the Nao Victoria, commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano, would return, and on this tour you’ll learn what happened on the voyage, as well as visit the very places where the voyage was planned, prepared and celebrated. Amazing to think that such change started here. Personally I think I’d have been very tempted to stay, because there can’t be many places in the world lovelier than Sanlúcar.
Wednesday at 11:00am. Meeting point: Plaza de la Paz, Barrio Alto. Duration: 2h 30min approx. Price: from 10€ adults / children (5-12 years) free. Book in advance.
