“On this occasion I think we have managed to fuse the two things I like most in the world,” the globe-trotting flamenco dancer told Diario de Cádiz, “song and dance”. Specifically ‘el cante’ or flamenco song, because Guerrero is, of course, a leading flamenco dancer and choreographer. The show is divided into three flamenco song recitals accompanied by his mesmerising ‘baile’. Guerrero who, when not involved in his own solo projects, is a leading light in the Aida Gómez ballet company, spent much of last year on planes, travelling from Beijing to Turin, and Mexico to the Netherlands, but this eponymous performance sees him back on home turf.

Zambombas, flamenco, coplas . . . all perks of living in Cadiz, but sometimes, just sometimes, we crave something a little northern and classical. It might be the Mozart Festival, but Schubert, Haydn and Chopin also make an appearance. The soloists include the Cadiz-born oboe player, Berta Bermejo Moya. Details as follows:
Jan 22, Palacio de Congresos, Mozart and Schubert (from €20)

Music by Verdi, plot by Shakespeare – you can’t go wrong. Indeed many say it’s the greatest opera ever written, although there is a lot of competition, not least from Verdi himself who wrote this masterpiece after basking in the glory of Aida. It definitely has all the ingredients: love, error, jealousy, downward spiral and death, and the score is sublime. Brought to you by the Teatro Principal de Palma de Mallorca. Dress up for a big night out.

This is the 38th Concurso de Saetas, and therefore a well-established part of the Easter season.  A saeta is a rich mix of flamenco and Catholicism, an achingly mournful solo sung usually as an address from a balcony to the image of Christ or the Virgin Mary passing in the Semana Santa procession below. Organised by the Peña Flamenca Buena Gente, this is the grand finale, the best of the best.

A celebration of slippery, peppery, local golden oil with contests, tastings, local produce markets, and of course dancing into the night . . . well, into the morning, technically – although on Sunday there's live music from a family friendly 1.30pm . The events start on Friday night but are spread over the weekend (and over the town, but with a focal hub around Paseo Fluvial and the Centro de Interpretación Medioambiental del Olivo), call by and buy local.
